Minecraft How To Change Text Color

This commodity is about the legacy §-based formatting arrangement. For the modern JSON system, see Raw JSON text format.

A volume showing the possible formatting options with the character that performs them.

Formatting codes (also known every bit colour codes) add together color and modifications to text in-game.

Text in Minecraft can be formatted with the section sign (§). In Boulder Edition, the section sign can be entered into signs, world names, books, renaming items and in the chat. In Java Edition, department signs may be used in server.backdrop, pack.mcmeta, splashes.txt, world titles, and server names. External programs tin can be used to insert it in other locations.

Usage [ ]

Text can exist formatted using the section sign (§) followed past a graphic symbol. A § symbol followed past a hex digit in the message tells the client to switch colors while displaying text. In Bedrock Edition, the § symbol tin can exist used in whatsoever text input, while in Coffee Edition, it may be used in server.backdrop, pack.mcmeta, world titles, and server names.

In Java Edition, if a colour code is used after a formatting code, the formatting code is disabled across the color code point. For example, §cX§nY displays equally 10Y , whereas §nX§cY displays equally X Y . Therefore, when using a color code in tandem with a formatting code, ensure the color lawmaking is used first and reuse the formatting code when changing colors.

In Bedrock Edition, formatting codes persist later a color code. Furthermore, if an obfuscated code is used and a reset code is not used earlier the finish of the line, the client GUI continues to obfuscate text past the MOTD and into the version number brandish.

Color codes [ ]

Hex digit to color mapping. Apply "§" followed by the respective color letter of the alphabet/number; e.g. "§due east" gives yellow.

Letters sent from the server to the customer can contain colour codes, which allow the coloring of text for various purposes.

§r resets the styles of following characters; eastward.g., §nXXX§rYYY displays as XXXYYY.

Typing [ ]

  • To enter "§" on Windows with most U.s./UK English keyboards type Alt +NUMPAD2 NUMPAD1 (alt lawmaking on cp437) or Alt +NUMPAD7 NUMPAD8 NUMPAD9. For any other keyboard, the Windows ANSI version Alt +NUMPAD0 NUMPAD1 NUMPAD6 NUMPAD7 often works.
  • If EnableHexNumpad is enabled in the Windows registry, Alt +NUMPAD+ A NUMPAD7 (using the main keyboard for "A") works for whatever language due to information technology being Unicode.
  • On a Mac with a United states keyboard, type ⌥ Pick +6 (or ⌥ Choice +v for Us Extended). For any other keyboard, blazon ⌥ Option +0 0 a 7.
  • On Linux with the compose primal activated, type Etch due south o. The symbol can too be typed by using Unicode shortcuts: Ctrl +⇧ Shift +u 0 0 a 7.
  • To enter "§" on a Nintendo Switch, select languages (globe icon), roll to the bottom to find the "Symbols" language, and and then select Folio 2 to observe the symbol to the right in the bottom line.
  • For various Android keyboards:
    • Google Keyboard (GBoard): The "§" is under the paragraph "¶" marking. To access, tap the number/symbol button, tap button above "ABC" to access more symbols, so concur downwards the paragraph key.
    • Samsung Keyboard: The "§" is nether the "s" fundamental. To access, concur down on the "southward" and so slide over to the "§" mark.
  • For iOS:
    • On the iPad the "§" is under the percent sign. To access, tap the number/symbol button and and then swipe down on the percent sign.
    • On the iPhone the "§" is under the ampersand "&". To access, tap the number/symbol button and so hold downward the ampersand key and slide over to the "§" mark.
  • For Xbox:
    • On the Xbox 1 the "§" is under the backward P "¶". To access, use the left trigger, concur down A while on ¶ until other options popular upward. Movement the cursor over to the "§" marker and use A to select.
    • Ane tin can also highlight the S key on the standard alphanumeric keyboard, so press and concord the A button to reveal several "alternate" characters, including "§". This method also works on the Windows 10 version.

When part of JSON text, the symbol tin be written equally \u00A7 or \u00a7.

Alternatively in Boulder Edition, the character can exist copied from this page (§) and Ctrl +V (Windows) or ⌘ Cmd +V (macOS) tin can exist pressed to paste the character into a book. Note that pasting does not work on everything (e.g. chat, control blocks, world names), and using the JSON format or another method may be necessary.

While in chat in Java Edition, usage of this graphic symbol disconnects the user, even in 'offline' single histrion mode, and thus cannot be used directly in commands such equally /say.

In early Java Edition Classic versions, the grapheme used was & instead of §.[2]

Sample text [ ]

The following text tin can exist pasted into a Book and Quill (prior to 1.14) to produce what is shown in the moving-picture show:

Employ in server.backdrop and pack.mcmeta [ ]

In society to go an MOTD colored or formatted, \u00A7 must be used instead of §; for example, §5 would exist \u00A75. The full list of them is listed below. Colors tin be used in conjunction with formatting. The formatting must be done after the color.

Given that pack.mcmeta files accept raw JSON text as descriptions, the usage of § can be replaced by text components with different color and style, though using § nevertheless works.

Compatibility with older versions [ ]

Formatting codes can exist used in the motd line in a server.properties file, but the department signs must be escaped as \u00A7. If a department sign is entered direct, the server replaces information technology with \u00C2\u00A7 (§); clients display the \u00C2 character as a question mark. Delete the \u00C2 character in the MOTD if it comes with a bunch of question marks: this happens if something is not compatible.

Employ in custom linguistic communication packs [ ]

Formatting codes tin can exist used to colour names and description in language files past using § then whatsoever of the numbers/messages displayed above. This is also used in terminate.txt and credits.txt. An example of this is §dDiamond to make the name of a diamond appear every bit Diamond.

Since Java Edition 1.xvi, §r tin no longer exist used to remove italics from custom translation tags within language files. For instance, if the translation tag "particular.instance.test": "§rTest Item" is applied to the Name display data of a custom item ({display:{Proper name:'{translate:"item.example.test"}'}), it nevertheless appears as Test Item rather than simply Exam Item. This is non true of whatever other formatting options.

Use in world names [ ]

With the use of external tools, such as NBTExplorer, earth names tin can have custom colors and formatting codes. To modify the proper name, choose the LevelName tag in the earth'south level.dat. In this instance,[ more than data needed ] LevelName is gear up to §1R§2e§3d§4s§5t§6o§7n§8e §9C§ar§be§ca§dt§ei§fo§1n§2s.

Additionally, the player can rename the world's binder to contain 1 of the codes. In the world choice menu, the specified color or effect appears.

The player can besides use a resources pack with a § already in the world name when creating a globe and all the user has to exercise is to change or modify the color lawmaking later the §.

In Bedrock Edition, the player is immune to use a § inside of the globe name when creating the world. This allows for using custom colors and formatting codes within of the earth name without having to modify the game.

Use in server names [ ]

With the use of a third party tool such equally NBTExplorer, server names can accept custom colors. To employ this functionality, select the Name attribute in the servers.dat file inside the .minecraft directory using a 3rd party tool. In the post-obit case, the Name tag is prepare to §iv§lMinecraft §6§lServer:

Obfuscated format §k has changed iii times in Coffee Edition after being introduced in Beta 1.8. On the correct is an prototype of how the obfuscated text of 1234567890abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz~!@#$%^&*()-=_+{}[] looks in 4 different versions.

Trivia [ ]

  • The color codes almost exactly friction match, in order, the xvi colors available using a Color Graphics Adapter (CGA), every bit released in 1981. Only color half dozen differs; the value for colour 6 in Minecraft –
     #FFAA00
    – differs from that made for CGA –
